People First is more than just a fun group of friends. Learn what is going on in the disability movement. Be empowered and supported in working for the changes you want.

People First is a self advocacy organization operated nationally by and for people with disabilities. People First of Georgia has 600 members working through local chapters across the state. Every chapter is building the self advocacy movement in Georgia, strengthening self advocates and expanding the number of people involved in self advocacy.

The three main goals of People First are to:

    • free people from nursing homes and institutions,
    • increase choice and control in the lives of people with disabilities, and
    • create positive social attitudes toward people with disabilities.
The Institute on Human Development & Disability works with People First of Georgia on the following activities:

    • chapter establishment and support,
    • three board meetings per year,
    • a quarterly newsletter and web page,
    • annual state wide conference,
    • advisors' meetings and retreats, and
    • grant writing efforts.
