The GA PAS Corps, an AmeriCorps program at the Institute on Human Development and Disability (IHDD) at the University of Georgia, strives to strengthen communities by bringing about lasting and constructive change in the lives of people with disabilities.

    Who We Are

    AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 75,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters.

Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.

    GA PAS Corps
The GA PAS Corps is a diverse group of AmeriCorps members including men and women of all ages representing differnet economic backgrounds, racial and ethnic groups, religions and people of all abilities.

    Our Mission

GA PAS Corps/AmeriCorps members work to strengthen community awareness about disability issues, to foster diversity, and to improve the quality of life for community members with disabilities.

When our program began in 1994, it was an answer to a call made by the leaders of this country for citizens to give back to their communities in order to meet the needs of fellow citizens. Since our beginning, 171 GA PAS Corps members have done just that, providing over 79, 000 hours of personal assistance service for people with disabilities in the state of Georgia.

Member services have been guided by the needs of the individuals served including personal care in the home, work initiatives, independent living skills, community service, and community inclusion.

    What We Do

GA PAS Corps members serve the disability community in Metro Atlanta and Northeast Georgia. Our members serve in diverse ways through our many partnering agencies, including AID Atlanta, Brain & Spinal Injury Trust Fund Commission, Cobb Douglas Community Service Board, Governors Council on Developmental Disabilities and Jewish Fmaily & Career Services.

In addition to serving the disability community, members will also organize and participate in many one time service projects, coordinate and present outreach activities that will increase community awareness related to disability issues, gain leadership skills, plan and facilitate monthly member trainings, explore their own values, goals, and future opportunities, and develop personal relationships with people from different backgrounds.

    Eligibility and Benefits

AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents aged 17 or older. Members serve full or part time over a 10 to 12 month period. In return for their service committment, members will receive a monthly living allowance, forebearance of interest on student loans, and ongoing trainings throughout the service year. Additionally, full-time members are eligible for health insurance and childcare benefits.

After successfully completing a term of service, members are eligible to receive an education award. The education award can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education or training, or to repay qualified student loans. The award currently is $4,725 for a year of full-time service, and $2,362.50 for part-time service. A member has up to seven years after his or her term of service has ended to claim the award.
