    • Congratulations to PhD student Mai Spaulding and Double Dawgs dietetics major Anna Faye Dupree for winning 2024 Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics awards! Mai won the Distinguished Service by a Researcher award and Anna Faye won the Outstanding Dietetic Student in a DPD Program award. NUTR alumna Lianni Maldonado earned the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award. Winners will be honored during an awards ceremony during the GAND Annual Conference and Expo in March.
    • Congratulations to recent graduate Elizabeth "Betsy” Cogan who has been selected as a recipient of the David Kritchevsky Graduate Student Award! Dr. Kritchevsky (1920–2006) was a founding member of the Nutrition Research Editorial Board with a lifetime of significant achievements in nutrition, especially in the area of lipids and cardiovascular disease. Each year, two awards of each are provided with support from the journal’s publisher, Elsevier, to recognize graduate and professional students who publish outstanding articles in the journal. Betsy is being recognized for her first-author publication: Cogan B, Pearson RC, Paton CM, Jenkins NT, Cooper JA.     • The UGA Career Center recently recognized Alex Anderson, Tracey Brigman and Emma Laing as student career success influencers! Graduates in the Class of 2023 have identified these faculty as people who have significantly contributed to their career development and success.

NUTR students Anna Faye Dupree (“Blue Ribbon Bakery”) and Beatriz Ortega (“Nutri Space”) were also selected as finalists to compete at the event. Callie’s pitch, “Food with Flow,” an app that tracks menstrual cycles and provides targeted nutrition and exercise recommendations to help support women, earned her a $2,500 investment. The UGA FACS Extension Healthy GA Wellness Team was recognized during the NEAFCS annual meeting held in Providence, Rhode Island, September 11-14, 2023. Health Georgia Wellness Curriculum received the Excellence in Multi-state Collaboration Award – 3rd place National, 1st place Southern Region. The award promotes and recognizes outstanding Extension Family and Consumer Sciences programs conducted by a multi-state team that demonstrates effective performance and significant results.     • Congratulations to the UGA SNAP-Ed Program for receiving regional recognition from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences! Our SNAP-Ed team was recognized during the NEAFCS annual meeting held in Providence, Rhode Island, September 11-14, 2023. The Drink Water, Georgia! Campaign received the Social Media Education Award – 3rd place Southern Region. The award recognizes the statewide efforts of the program and the participation of County Extension offices, their faculty, and staff in promoting the benefits of drinking water.
    • Congratulations to Joseph Kindler for being appointed to Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine! Dr. Kindler’s appointment is effective September 1, 2023.
    • Congratulations to MS student Valentina Paez and MS-DI student Skylar Mercer for being selected as recipients of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Scholarships! Valentina received the General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition Diversity Scholarship and Skylar received the Foundation General Scholarship.

    • Congratulations to Ali Berg for being selected to serve as a FACS Faculty Fellow, which is part of the new FACS Faculty Leadership Fellows Program! Within the two-year commitment, fellows will engage with the wider university community as well as in cohort activities and FACS administration activities. Dr. Berg will be describing her project at the upcoming College Assembly.

    • Congratulations to Ali Berg for being selected as the recipient of the 2023 D.W. Brooks Award for Excellence in Extension! Dr. Berg will be officially recognized and celebrated for her accomplishments at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences awards ceremony on November 16th.
    • Congratulations to Tracey Brigman for being tapped as the new host of "Meals from the Field," a monthly recipe segment hosted by the Farm Monitor! Dr. Brigman shot her first segment last week in our food lab with a recipe featuring tomatoes that will debut later this month. Photos were shared on the NUTR Facebook and Instagram pages.

    • Hea Jin Park’s lab received funding from Abbott Laboratories for their study entitled, 'Perinatal supplementation of vitamin E on cognition of offspring using a sow/piglet dyad model.’
    • Dr. Park also received the Study Abroad Program Development Grant from the UGA Office of Global Engagement for the new study away program, 'Nutrition and Culinary Study in Korea and Japan.' The Nutrition and Culinary Study in Korea and Japan will be offered in Maymester 2024.

Established upon the retirement of Lynn Bailey, professor and department head emerita in nutritional sciences, the lectureship brings renowned leaders in the field of nutrition to UGA for a presentation to faculty and graduate students. Lichtenstein is the Stanley N. Gershoff Professor of Nutrition Science and Policy in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and Senior Scientist and Director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Team at the Joan Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging.     • The FACS Undergraduate Research Opportunity gives undergraduate FACS students a $1,000 award and the opportunity for mentored participation in research conducted with a FACS faculty member, stimulating student interest and involvement in scientific inquiry. The mentoring faculty member will be given access to up to $1,000 for related research costs. Employed as a PCT/Unit Secretary on the Mother/Baby unit at Piedmont Athens Regional, Hallie was chosen for this award (out of 40,000 employees and 3,500 nominees) for her quick thinking and compassion that changed the course of a young family’s life.     • The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Frederick Green Memorial Nutrition Communications Experience Award supports dietetics students in ACEND programs by enhancing their capabilities and experience in the area of nutrition communications, specifically related to media and public relations, through a paid experience with an RD. Most experiences are typically 6-8 weeks (full-time) in length. The Foundation is currently accepting applications from students and dietetic interns.     • The National Dairy Council is recruiting for a summer intern in Scientific, Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs. NDC’s internship is a paid, three-month internship designed to support emerging leaders in health and wellness develop their skills and gain meaningful professional experience in the areas of science translation, nutrition communication and food regulation. The NDC intern will work within a dynamic, cross-functional team to educate diverse groups of stakeholders on the science of dairy’s contributions to health and wellness. The NDC intern will gain a deep understanding of the role dairy foods play in health, wellness and sustainable nutrition and will identify future areas for research, education and engagement for the dairy industry. The intern will be exposed to a variety of career development opportunities, including agriculture/farming/food production, leadership, personal branding, social media and other career enhancing workshops and trainings and opportunities for interacting with the farmers through on-the-farm experience(s). The impressive, multidisciplinary team is made up of RDNs and scientists who are dairy subject matter experts and passionate thought leaders in their respective fields. This is a paid, full-time position (8:30AM-4:30PM; 35 hour/week) based in Rosemont, Illinois (Chicagoland area) over the summer with the potential to work remotely.     • The Georgia Nutrition Council invites nutrition professionals to showcase their latest projects, research, or best practices as a concurrent session or an ignite session during the 2024 Annual Conference. Submit abstracts here. Those selected to present will be required to join GNC and register for the conference, which will be held virtually on March 28th & 29th. This year's conference theme is "A Path Forward: Nutrition Sustainability for All."     • The Georgia Nutrition Council invites nutrition professionals to showcase their latest projects, research, or best practices as a concurrent session or an ignite session during the 2024 Annual Conference. Submit abstracts here. Those selected to present will be required to join GNC and register for the conference, which will be held virtually on March 28th & 29th. This year's conference theme is "A Path Forward: Nutrition Sustainability for All." The deadline for abstract submissions is December 11, 2023.  Applicants will be notified if their abstract is accepted for presentation by January 17, 2024.

    • On Wednesday, November 15th at 3:30 pm, NUTR alumna Bree Marsh will be giving a talk on "Sports Nutrition and Functional Foods" for FDST 7070E. The presentation is open to all who wish to attend. Bree will deliver a live Zoom presentation (beginning at 3:30 pm) followed by questions.
    • The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Committee for Lifelong Learning seeks original ideas and subject matter experts to present advanced-level, evidence-based sessions and workshops at the 2024 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo®. Proposals will be accepted online until November 15.
    • The call for proposals is open for the Diversify Dietetics Annual Summit. Sessions are 60 minutes and can be a traditional presentation, panel discussion, cooking demo, or workshop. Topics can span various areas, such as Culinary, Sports, Behavioral Health, Entrepreneurship, Community, Clinical, and Professional Development. All sessions should either feature BIPOC speakers, impact BIPOC communities, or be tailored for nutrition professionals of color. All sessions will take place both in person and virtually to ensure accessibility. Speakers will receive an honorarium and complimentary registration for the Summit.     • The Cooking for a Lifetime Cancer Prevention Cooking School presented by UGA Extension will host a class on November 16th from 6-7:30 pm. You will learn about reducing the risk of cancer, who should be screened for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer, and how to get screened. Included are a free cookbook, dinner, and door prizes.
